‘Dark Streets’
‘Dark streets’ is a soap based on the struggles and influences youths in London go through on a daily-basis. This soap captures the essence of life in London set on an estate on the outskirts of central London. The struggles of coping with school-life, while other influences are preventing youths from doing what they want.
Main Characters
As this is a soap opera, all of the soaps characters will be main characters. The parallel storylines will make some characters more talked about than others at a certain time due to the storyline they are involved in at that particular time. Most of characters will come from a lower/working class background this is so we can capture realism within the soap. Some of the types of characters we intend to include are:
•The Hard man– The person that no one on the block messes with as they know the consequences, only cares for a few people and does not care about the rest. Overall, a very dominant male
•The gossiper – a female on the estate that likes to cause and kick off the drama within the estate, very selfish and does not like seeing other people happy and does not applaud other peoples success.
•The wise person – The person within the community that likes to stay quiet and out of trouble, a person that other people within the estate turn if they are in need of help or assistance. This can be either a male or a female.
Location
‘Dark Streets’ will be set in an estate in Edmonton Green; this is because I feel Edmonton Green shows a gritty side to London and a good sense of realism that I think will fit in well with what is wanted in this soap. Other locations that will be used is Fore street long stretch of road that holds plenty of shops, pubs and social place which is a good place to build a sense of community from.
Style of Soap
Although we want to convey a gritty side to London with this soap, we also want to keep our target audience in mind; therefore we want to bring a sense of comedy into it as well, to keep our audience entertained at the same time. We also want to keep the violence to a minimum but bring in as much chaos and drama as possible without using the use of violence, however as we are conveying London I think it is essential that some violence is used.
Quick outline of first episode
The first episode of the ‘Dark Streets’ will be kicked off with drama and commotion as we enter the narrative with a funeral. The funeral will show the death of 18 year old Tyrone. I think this would be a good way of starting our soap as I believe the audience will be compelled to watch this as we don’t know anything about the characters as of yet and we want to know the cause of his death.
Target Audience
Our target audience for ‘Dark Streets’ will be 15-28 year olds, we want to challenge the typical soap opera but at the same time stick to the typical soap conventions, our soap will consist of younger characters unlike normal soaps so we can relate to our target audience. Our target audience will be of working/lower class people of society.
