Saul Target audience Feedback

After we had completed our final soap trailer we carried out extra tasks in order to gain audience feedback.

Below in order to gain a visually representation of our audience feedback me and Mustafa carried out an interview with our previous focus group to find out their thought on our trailer and give us constructive criticism on what they felt we could have improved.

Using our audience feedback i have annotated our final trailer and stated exactly how each convention has appealed to our target audience and also the reasons as t why we have used specific convention.

Above here i audience feedback in which mustafa gathered from his friends on facebook i feel as if this feedback is useful as most of his friends on facebook are within the age ranges of our target audience.

Saul - Evaluation task 4

We used the New flip cameras in order to produce our films these were more effective in comparison to the tape cameras we used last year within our AS project due to the fact that thier weight was lighter which made it easier for us to film and shoot scenes without the need of a Tripod. From the flip camera i learnt the basics of how to record and delete footage and also how to use the soom button effectively when recording.

We also used the flip camera in order to take stills for promotional purposes of our soap opera these included Posters, Magazine covers and also Website headers.

Above: here is an image of the still i used on my Magazine cover.

Above : we used the camera to get an establishing shot of the Trains entering the trainstation.

Above: over the sholder shot of Character Craig as he attacks character.

During the process of Construction, Research and Planning we used Apple computers to carry out a variety of tasks. We used a collection of software in order to Produce, Promote and carry out individual research into the conventions of Soap.

We used Photoshop to carry out Our auxillary task where we were required to create a magazine cover. We chose to use photoshop over other Media creating software such as Microsoft Published because of How professional the software is at creating Images.

Above: here is a copy of the Poster created by Demetri on Photoshop for 'Empire Avenue.'

Above: this is a copy of The soap magazine i created for the auxillary task.

Above: i used photoshop to create a banner for our site this was to add a sense of professionalism on our site because when analysing headers from websites of other soaps an advertising bar was always present.

We used facebook for research purposes in order to gain audience feedback through allowing our peers to leave useful comments and allowing them to critically analyse our trailer. This was significantly effective as most of our friends on facebook are of the age of our target audience so there feedback is most useful in enabling us to identify whether our soap appeals to its target audience.

We used i Web to create an overall template for our website. We produced a variety of pages in order to provide an online portal for audience members to visit in order to find out more about the soap.Although previously we had never used this software it was extremely straight forward and usful in helping our stages of production.

Above here is an early screen shot of the welcome page to our site.the website pages were very easy to make due to the fact that the application provided the oppertunity for users to select an overall template for the website.

We used i movie in order to carry out Basic editing of our focus group and audience analysis videos. We chose only to use this software to edit our focus group tasks due to the how basic this software is resulting in a lack of the ability to create certain effects for e,g, this software has limited effects in comparison to the software we used (Sony Vegas)

We used safari as a source of secondary research using it to research the conventions of the Soap Genre and other elements of Soap Dramas.

We used blogger to keep an online diary for the production process of our soap trailer.this was effective as it provided an online referance for us to refer back to after if we needed to recap on our process.

We used Safari to search the different conventions of Soap operas and research different soaps on online search engine google. This was successfull as each search result came up with thouands of results of secondary research.

We used London grid for learning in order to obtain Royalty free music to avoid breetching copyright laws.At first we found it difficult to find a track that most appeal our target audience but in the end we found an appropriate track we felt would be best suited to the conventions of a Soap opera.

We used Youtube to provide an online portal for Audiences to watch our trailer. Similar to our AS production we used Youtube as a Source of annotation for our trailer. This online application was sometimes difficult to use as we could not always make the video tags appear in the correct places.

Every software was not either not available to us on the schools Apple computer or was easier to use on a Windows computer because of this we decided to use both in order to carry out specific production tasks.

In comparison to The limiting factors of IMovie we felt that using Sony Vegas pro had many beneficial factors. We used sony Vegas in order to edit our Trailer on a more proffessional scale in comparison to last year.
Above here is a copy of our Trailers title sequence created on Sony Vegas. In comparison to the basic Typographics and Graphologic features presented on Imovie Sony vegas enables its user to create almost television like Captions/ Title sequences.

Also considering the fact that we would like to have our trailer previewed by the audiences of channels like E4 we felt our title sequences qould have to most suit the layout of many e4 programmes Title sequences.

We used microsoft word in order to Create and annotate tables. we used this software because we felt it was most easiest to create fast and efficient tables for our * shooting scripts * Production schedules * shooting schedules and also location Recci's

Below here is a copy of our production schedule.

We used more Basic microsoft software such as paint in order to save files to JPEG in order to post them on our blogs

Demetri - Evaluation Task 3

3.a Typical Audience Member

My typical audience member will be a female in her late teens, either studying her A-Levels or at Uni. My audience member will have recently experienced some of the elements this school-based show is about; she may be described as a hipster and interested with fashion and current affairs. Her hobbies will include partying, listening to her favourite musicians, social networking sites, reading magazines such as Ok. Her viewing habits will include watching other Soaps, maybe Eastenders or Coronation Street. She will watch other types of shows such as E News! And view various music channels. Her spending power will not be high considering she is a student, coming from a working class family she can relate to a lot of people in the show.

3.b Youtube Annotations

This is the annotated version of my group's Media trailer. It was uploaded to a Youtube account and Youtube's annotation feature is what was used to do this.

3.c Audience Feedback

In this video feedback is received from two students at Winchmore named Chris and Janki. We asked them a few questions, the first being 'what did you find most successful within our trailer?' to which the response was that it was interesting and left the viewer with a cliff hanger which is what we set out to do as it is a typical Soap Opera convention. Even if our audience was unclear of the genre throughout, the cliff hanger at the end surely would confirm that this is a Soap Opera. Our second question was 'Do you think the trailer was successful in meeting its target audience?' to which the response was that we did meet the target audience and the contemporary music we had in particular was key for our audience to relate to the Soap from watching the trailer. Our Soap is aimed at a slightly younger target audience than your conventional Soap Opera which is why some of our elements such as soundtrack and mise en scene have been approached in a less common manner when compared to most Soaps. Our third question was 'Do you think the shot types were successful in portraying narrative?' The shot types as well as editing were described as fast paced and showed the audience effectively where our main character was headed which is what we planned to do with our trailer, although it is a trailer for our Soap Opera we wanted to push the boundaries a bit by including fast paced shots and advanced editing as they are elements which allow us to set our production apart from others whilst remaining complacently in the Soap Opera genre's boundaries. Our 4th question was 'What do you think we needed to improve?' to which we were told that the relationship between our couple was ambiguous and could have been established better to give the audience a clearer understanding, although we did not want to give away too much in the trailer the feedback is correct. By making our couples relationship clearer to the audience they would have immediately gained a better understanding what our Soap is about and would have made our trailer better. Our final question was 'Do you think our Soap was successful in meeting the conventions of the Soap Opera genre?' to which we were told that the fact that our trailer looks realistic, and has topics that fit into the conventions of the Soap Opera and that the audience will be able to relate, which is exactly what we as a group wanted.

Overall I am very pleased with our audience feedback, everything has been perceived as our group planned it to be. By aiming our soap at a younger target audience we took the risk off creating something that wouldn't have been classed as a Soap Opera if it was not done properly, I believe that our research into the Soap Opera genre was key to us successfully creating a Soap Opera trailer. If I could go back and change anything my main improvement would be to establish a clearer relationship between the characters in my Soap, as our feedback states and also to maybe have introduced a few more characters. Also I would include more dialogue and change certain shot types such as a pan shot showing our character 'Saul' entering a room which looking back I don't feel worked that well.

Demetri - Empire Avenue Poster

This is the Empire Avenue poster created with Adobe Photoshop, it features two of our trailers main charcters who share a relationship. I have chosen to use them because it will help familiarise viewers with the trailer and because I liked the images composition. The male character is staring direcely at the audience as if to ask them for help wheras his partner seems interested in only him, this immediately draws up assumptions of they're relationship. The reason that I have chosen the blue background with the black style banner is because I felt that this theme suited the Soap and I also have the same theme running throughout the trailer with the captions.

Saul-Still Images Annotations of 'Trailer so far Empire Avenue'

We are now approaching the final stages of editing, Because of this i have decided to annotate the effectiveness of specific elements of our Trailer.

Above : I liked Demitris choice of shot. The use of Medium shots/ Close ups are common within the soap opera genre in order for the producers to capture the full expression of the characters Face.
Above: the image here i think is effective as demitri has excercised the Rule of third in order to ensure the character was in frame.

Above: The use of close-ups within this shot as it captures the full facial expression of the character whilst enabling the audience to identify exactly what it is the character is doing.

Above this is particularly effective because the slightly angular positioning of the camera creates the image that the train is passing a passenger who has just exited the train.

Above: I like the way that this establishing shot emcompases a sense of community within the train station from grown level. The choice of shot looks as if the camera plays the eyes of a pedestrian waiting for the oncoming train.

Above within many soaps this specific us of over the shot is often common however i do feel as if the camera could have been lower in order to ensure the male characters sholders were in proportion to the female characters body. However this use of Sot revearse shot in the form of an over the sholder shot was effective in capturing the full emotion on the characters faces.

The use of these three captions within the Editing i feel were sucessful in enabling the audience to identify exactly what is going on within the narrative of the soap without giving too much away.

Demetri - Empire Avenue Images

These are 5 of the images that were taken on a Kodak 720p digital camera. The purpose of these images were for my group to create posters, magazines and place on the Empire Avenue website. The images contain two main characters that will be in our Soap Opera trailer and portray the relationship that they share.
